Nowadays it takes a 15-year-old boy to give us a reality check. He forfeited his first-round Iowa state wrestling tournament match this week because he was matched-up against a girl. Gentlemen still exist!
When I played hockey in the 1970's feminism was going full-steam ahead, but girls were not allowed to play full-contact sports with boys for their own safety. Since then our society has gone insane.
I'm for women tearing-down silly stereotypes. For instance, what's wrong with a woman driving a truck, or a race car, or being a plumber, or a mechanic, or a building contractor, or a doctor? These professions have historically been male-dominated and there's no good reason for it, but we're going too far.
Now it's about pitting men and women against each other and destroying what being a gentleman is all about, which is the lynch pin of any strong society. The powers that be want men to regard women as no different in any way other than in sexual terms. Not in my world, and apparently not in Joel Northrup's either. I have no doubt this young man will go far in this life. He can look back on this for the rest of his life knowing he did the right thing.
Anyone who thinks this is about fear of losing to a girl in a full-contact sport is missing the point, and I think most of them are missing the point on purpose. I would never want my daughter to marry a guy who has no compunctions about wrestling competitively with girls. Is that too lofty a concept for today's crass society to grasp? Apparently so.
It's about being a gentleman. It's about class. He opens the door for her. He lets her choose where she wants to sit. He waits for her to sit before he sits. He runs out to get the car so she won't get wet. He protects women. He never abuses them. He never refers to his girlfriend as "my bitch", or worse. Any real man with class isn't going to play organized, competitive, full-contact sports with girls.
